Restructuring at Hogan Lovells
Causes Loss of 54 Positions

In continuing with its course of restructuring, Am Law 100 law firm Hogan Lovells recently announced its decision to release 54 professionals from its London office. According to Law.com, “the overwhelming majority… worked in business services functions, such as conflicts and compliance, finance, information technology, knowledge and research, marketing and business development and office services. A few legal support roles are also included within those 54 departures.”¹

A large portion of the positions were transferred to offices in Birmingham, England; Johannesburg, South Africa; and Louisville, United States.² Hogan Lovells’s Birmingham location focuses on “corporate and commercial, finance, litigation, real estate and real estate finance.”³ Its Johannesburg location centers around “Tax, Mining, Corporate Commercial, Competition, Construction, Employment, Commercial Litigation, Insurance, Business Rescue & Insolvency, Banking, and Real Estate.”⁴ Its Louisville location is its “second global business services center.”⁵ The moves to these locations mean minimized expenditures for the firm⁶, which maintains a unique focus on giving back and volunteerism.⁷

The decision to restructure resulted from the firm’s desire to increase efficiency. It was accompanied by updated technology and systems of leadership. During the operation, “Hogan Lovells offered voluntary retirement packages to some 400 employees.” Further decisions regarding certain positions have yet to be made.⁸
